When it Comes to Issues It's a Lose, Lose Situation For John McCain

With less then one month to go the surge Barack Obama and the Democrats are pushing is taking the GOP ticket to the brink of total annihilation in the electorate. Analyzing the current polls shows that all of the battleground states in traditional Republican territories are showing consistent trends of likely blowouts for the Obama campaign.
The early October surprise, the struggling economy and failing financial sector, has reared its head and the consequence of it is paying dividends for Obama. It is in turn making this campaign more about the issues and less about anything else that presidential candidates may try to use to sway voters.
So in order for the McCain campaign to win they have to focus on the issues that matter to voters? If only it were that easy! The problem for McCain is that the core of his campaign, the hardcore conservative Republican, is generally in stark contrast to what Democratic, Independent and even moderate Republican Voters are looking for in this election season.
If McCain starts talking about the things that Barack Obama is preaching such as helping the middle class, health care availability for all, tax cuts for the middle-lower class and a massive energy plan that focuses more on alternative energy McCain risks upsetting his core Republican supporters.
Already we have seen this happen. McCain, in the only town hall meeting with Barack Obama, pulled out his 300 Billion Dollar plan to purchase bad mortgages and sell them back to the buyer at a discounted rate. Basically discounting overpriced mortgages. Conservative Republicans were up in arms over this. They are decrying talk of this McCain idea. And Obama sensing a political advantage slammed the details of McCain's proposal. An idea that might appeal to the Democratic and Independent voter doesn't fly with the Republican base. The Republican voter stronghold just does not align with the desires of the rest of mainstream voters. And that's bad news for McCain.
The risk is great and the reward little for McCain. By talking about issues that matter to Democrats, Independents and moderate Republicans who he hopes to snipe for himself he risks upheaval in his conservative Republican base. All for what? Just to snipe a few voters away from Obama. If McCain upsets the base then he risks them staying home on November 4th. Senator McCain is between a rock and a hard place for sure.
His only tool at this point is to continue going negative and unfortunately for McCain this election year is not about who has the best smear campaign. It's all about the issues that McCain can't deliver without upsetting his Republican base. The self-proclaimed maverick can't overcome opposing his own party to satisfy what the majority voters in battleground states want this election season.
Existing within American politics is a check and balance. If there was a trillion dollar surplus and people felt richer or able to attain wealth they would be more interested in a candidate like McCain or Republican ideals. Most people feel like they have less than they did in the past. So they are going to opt for the Democratic ticket that promises more for the struggling American. It has little to do with who's been in Washington longer or war accolades. This election is all about who is going to help struggling citizens with the issues that matter most to majority voters. Senator Obama is connecting overwhelmingly with voters on those issues.
So unfortunately for the Republican in waiting this election season he was doomed to an uphill battle that just seems to be getting steeper as we close in on election day. It's a lose, lose situation for John McCain.
